One-Night Trip to Chinchón: A Cozy Madrid Getaway

While people often look to Toledo or Segovia as their first options for day trips or one-nighters from Madrid, Chinchón can get overlooked. However, this picturesque town, located only about a one-hour car ride away from the city but still within the Community of Madrid, really makes you feel like you’ve gone back in time. Although a day trip is totally possible, I think a one-night trip to Chinchón is an ideal getaway from Madrid city life. Spending the night is worth it to soak in everything this unique town has to offer without the rush.

Our One-Night Trip to Chinchón

Chinchón is best-known for its unmistakeable Plaza Mayor, characterized by its distinctive green balconies. The plaza actually becomes a bullring in the summer – hence the balconies for spectators. The plaza feels like a blast to a medieval past, and I loved it. We ate a typical lunch of roasted lamb on a balcony with a view right over the Plaza Mayor at Restaurante La Balconada – it was pretty perfect…10/10 would recommend 😍. Pro tip: Call in advance to book a table – even up to a week or two before your trip – as this place can fill up quick (especially on the coveted balconies).

Besides crushing food and beers in the Plaza Mayor, your main goal in Chinchón is a good paseo through town, where you’ll catch pretty views of the town and surrounding countryside. Be sure to stroll by the clock tower and the church, La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (although it wasn’t open when we went).

We stayed the night at Los Balcones de Galaz, a little apartment right on the plaza, which was a great call. After a busy day of walking around town, we had a cozy dinner of wine and local cheese on our private terrace overlooking the Plaza Mayor 😊.
